The British Columbia foreign buyer tax in Canada has caused Seattle to be increasingly sought-after by international property buyers, reports The Seattle Times (15 September 2016). Juwai Data showed that Chinese searches for Seattle property more than doubled after the B.C. foreign buyer tax was imposed. According to Juwai.com President of the Americas Matthew Moore, Seattle also received the most enquiries from Chinese buyers in four of the last seven months, beating past favourites Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Juwai Data further revealed that two-thirds of the Chinese buyers cited education (typically for their children) as their primary motivator, followed by lifestyle and travel opportunities (24 percent), and investment potential (16 percent). “There’s just been substantially more awareness and notoriety of Seattle in China. More press, more articles, more media attention,” said Moore.
