Portugal has seen an upswing in recent months as wealthy residents and investors from Hong Kong and China clamour for an alternative residency amid escalating political tensions in Hong Kong, reported the South China Morning Post (13 August 2019). According to property portal Juwai.com, Hongkongers and mainland Chinese invested US$300.2 million into Portugal through its golden visa programme in 2018. "Nine out of 10 of those dollars went into real estate," said Georg Chmiel, executive chairman at Juwai.
