Chinese New Year 2022: Hello to the Year of the Tiger

Chinese New Year, aka Lunar New Year, aka Spring Festival, is the most important event at the beginning of the year. It is celebrated in China and other East Asian countries and held in many Western cities, called the Lunar New Year celebrations. 

A festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It was traditionally a time to honour deities and ancestors, and it has also become a time to feast and visit family members. 

The celebrations traditionally last about two weeks in total, from Chinese New Year’s Eve to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the lunar year. 

Different parts of the world have their customs and traditions but share the same theme: seeing out the old year and welcoming in the luck and prosperity of a new year.

 

So what does the year of the Tiger represent?

Welcome to 2022, the year of the Tiger. If you were born in  1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, and 2022, your Chinese zodiac sign is the Tiger, associated with strength, bravery, and exorcising evils.

2010 was a Gold Tiger year, and 2022 was a Water Tiger year, occurring every 60 years.

The Tiger comes third in the Chinese zodiac and is considered the king of all beasts.

The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches system is the basis for the Zodiac system.

It features one of five elements (Water, Wood, Fire, Metal and Earth) applied to Tiger years on a rotating basis. This year is a water Tiger, the first of its kind since 1962.

Those born in the Year of the Tiger are supposedly kind, adventurous and enthusiastic but display aggressive, short-tempered and anxious traits.
