In a bid to ensure Chinese buyers are not put off by “inauspicious” numbers, Australian developers are leaving off certain numbers from their newest buildings reveals the the Daily Mail (8 March 2016). In Chinese, the number four sounds like the word “death” in Mandarin, hence it is rarely used in any buildings in China. Now, this supersitious belief has emerged in Australia too, as property developers increasingly focus on Chinese property investors, are quick to remove anything that may deter Chinese buyers from sealing the deal – including entire floors. According to Juwai data, Chinese developers invested about $5 billion in Australian real estate. With the yuan’s purchasing power continuing to grow in Australia, Chinese buyers are predicted to be more likely to 'convert their money into offshore assets, such as Australian real estate,’ says Juwai.com.
