China’s financial market turmoil is expected to accelerate real estate purchases by wealthy Chinese in the US and elsewhere, reports Business Insider (29 August 2015). Properties abroad are seen as a safer investment option, and the US is popular with Chinese buyers who consider it investment with relatively moderate risk yet high returns. Additionally, the QDII2 overseas-investment scheme is set to kick in later this year, allowing Chinese citizens to invest overseas directly should also bolster overseas real estate purchases. “With QDII2 in mind, within five years we might look back and think of the current levels of Chinese cross-border investment as quaint,” Andrew Taylor, Co-CEO of Juwai.com.
