New Zealand's new policy banning foreign homebuyers has been met with mixed reactions from industry experts, reports Newshub (16 August 2018). Some experts have pointed out that international investors are still able to buy new homes and land in New Zealand, while noting that Australia and Singapore are both exempt from the overseas buyer restriction at the same time. According to Juwai.com spokesperson Dave Platter in a Reuters article, the overseas buyer ban is neither wise nor useful. "Foreign buying... tends to be focused on new development, making clear again that foreign investment leads to the creation of new dwellings. That's vital in a market with a housing shortage, like Auckland," said Platter.
