The type of Chinese tourists visiting Australia is changing, reports the Australian Financial Review (27 December 2016). The large groups of Chinese tourists who used to pour out of buses under the Sydney Harbour Bridge are now being replaced by smaller groups of young and bilingual professionals seeking experiential travels. However, Australia's share of the Chinese tourism market still pales in comparison to the number of Chinese buying property or studying there. "There is a yawning gap between the way the typical Chinese customer of ours looking at real estate sees Australia's competitiveness versus tourism," says Gavin Norris, Head of Australia at Juwai.com, the biggest property portal Chinese consumers use to buy property overseas. "We have a place of beauty here rather than anything of any historical significance, you have to be bilingual when you come here and despite the FX movements we are still fairly costly compared to our competitors. Maybe that is why we have a small share," said Norris.
